MCCS Updates and Resources

Here are some updates and resources that might be of interest to your Marines and families.

1. Family Medical Leave update:
The Department of Labor has issued a new rule benefitting military families and airline flight crews

2. On February 5, 2013 the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs,
Eric K. Shinseki announced a major collaboration between Student Veterans of
America (SVA), the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC), and the VA designed
to track the success of student veterans at a national level. The VA is
working with SVA and NSC to create an education completion database for
Post-9/11 and Montgomery GI Bill beneficiaries.

3. Free Tax Preparation

a) Military OneSource provides free tax preparation with H&R Block
for eligible service members.

b) The IRS offers a free program for those who qualify: The VITA
Program generally offers free tax help to people who make $51,000 or less
and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified
volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic
filing to qualified individuals in local communities. They can inform
taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify such as
Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or
the Disabled. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood
centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations.
