Gravity Road / Ghost Slope

Do you know of gravity road? It exists over the world. Gravity road, also known as a magnetic hill. It is a place where the layout of the surrounding land produces the optical illusion that a very slight downhill slope appears to be an uphill slope. It is called "Yurei-zaka or Obake-zaka"(Ghost slope) in Japanese. There is one in Kume island. It's worth experiencing! Remember, bring something to roll like a ball.

DoDDS School Re-zoning in Sunabe

School Re-zoning Will Affect Sunabe Residents for School Year 2013-14

Good Afternoon, Okinawa!

Enrollment at Amelia Earhart Intermediate School and Bob Hope Primary School have exceeded capacity. In an effort to deal with this issue and ensure that the integrity of programs our schools is kept intact, the Department of Defense Education Activity is modifying the school zones for residents in the Sunabe area. The new zoning plan will result in 200 students from Amelia Earhart and Bob Hope moving to the Kadena Elementary School at the beginning of the next school year (2013-14). Although the destination has moved to Kadena Elementary, the bus stops for students living in the Sunabe area will remain unchanged.

We’re posting this as a general reminder for our Navy families; all affected families in the Sunabe area have ALREADY been contacted by the School Superintendent. If you have any questions, please go to the http://www.okinawa.pac.dodea.edu/ site for answers!

Have a great Navy day!

Sanba Day 3-8

March 8th is “Sanba Day.” San = 3 in Japanese, and 8 = ba. No, it’s not about samba in Brazil. I am talking about a musical instrument that is made by 3 woods, and it looks and sounds like castanets. You might hear the sound of it when you watched a shimauta (Okinawan folk song) performance. Sanba events are taking place in Okinawa today, so it would be good to attend one of them.

Whale Watching

People from in and out of Okinawa visit Zamami Village for whale watching. Currently Zamami Village is in the middle of whale watching season, and people cheered when they saw whales jumped out of the water and made splash. Whales come to Okinawa at this time of year for nurturing, delivering, and coupling. Whale watching season will be continued until early April, so would you like to watch them on the ocean? I believe this movie will make you want to go and watch them. Please check the movie on the website below.

Changes to Green Line Schedule and Routes

The Green Line is changing some of its services, see below to find out more... --GySgt Griffin

Effective Friday, 1 March, TGL will implement a system wide upgrade. This upgrade is necessary to ensure the sustainability and maximized efficiency of The Green Line (TGL).

The most significant change is the combining of northern express routes and Intra Shuttle with Express routes aboard some camps. The #2 and #4 buses combine making the #2/4 route. Departures to Northern Camps (Courtney, Hansen and Schwab) from Foster will be on the 1/2 hours. This will provide service to the Courtney Commissary 7-days a week as well as the Courtney RV track along with weekend and holiday connections to the #4-T (Taiyo Golf Course Shuttle).

The #44 Foster Intra Shuttle will eliminate its current "Up - Down" routing and focus on connecting the New U.S. Navy Hospital, Camp Foster to critical areas aboard Foster to include Building #1. Connection to the #44 bus from outer camps will be at the Foster Concession Mall (Exchange) bus stop.

Intra Camp Shuttle service will be provided by Express buses at selected bus stops aboard each camp.

Additional TGL information may be obtained by calling the TGL Customer Service Center at 645-3843.

Okinawan Horse Racing

“Nmaharase” is a traditional horse racing in Okinawa which was enjoyed from the Ryukyu dynasty to the prewar period. Horses for this traditional racing were used to be Okinawa’s local species which is relatively little and gentle by nature. Those local species were used as baggage horses or assistance during squeezing sugar cane to make sugar. As these local species were not originally bred for horse racing, this “Nmaharase” horse racing is very unique that the race is not to determine the fastest but the most beautiful running style. The traditional Ryukyu horse racing “Nmaharase” is reviving for the first time in almost 70 years at Okinawa Zoo & Museum on March 2nd and 10th. How about appreciating this beautiful Ryukyu traditional event?
